LASC 234
Issues in Latin American Studies I
Final Examination Study Guide

The final examination will be given 8:00-10:00am on Monday, December 13, 2010, in Key 0103. The two-hour minute examination represents 20% of the total course grade.

Part I: Identifications (25% of examination grade)

You will define five terms drawn from key vocabulary from Modules I-IV. Each definition should be at least two complete sentences in length. To receive full credit, each identification should reference a specific course element (e.g., an assigned reading; a screened video; a podcast; a primary source; an online discussion) that is relevant to defining the term.

There will be a handful of bonus IDs.

Part II: Long Essay (75% of examination grade)

In an essay that draws explicitly and specifically from the assigned materials and the important analytical concepts from each of the course's four modules (e.g., Caste, Race, and Color; Religion, Faith, and Belief Systems; Gender and Sexuality; Patterns and Problems of Migration), you will develop an essay that offers a critical understanding of the lives of the Mamanis, a real-life Aymara family from Bolivia who is featured in Winn's Americas textbook and the video Mirrors of the Heart, and the Xuncaxes, the fictional K'iche' family from Guatemala who are the main protagonists of the feature-length motion picture El Norte (1983).
